Take a look at these absolutely beautiful, golden, gooey rolls fresh out of my kitchen. If you stumbled across my page or saw these sitting on a counter, you wouldn’t hesitate for a second. You would look at those perfect frosted swirls and say, “Oh, Frenchy made some delicious cinnamon rolls!”They look exactly like what you expect. But if you were to step into my kitchen and take a big bite… you would instantly realize your eyes tricked you. Because these aren’t traditional cinnamon rolls at all. They are Honey Bun Cinnamon Rolls! Unless I explicitly told you any different, you would be completely convinced by the appearance. It looks like one thing on the outside, but it is actually something completely different on the inside.

And that got me thinking this week about a very serious trap we all face: The art of deception.

How many times in our lives have we been tricked, deceived, or manipulated? This is the enemy’s absolute favorite strategy. The devil doesn’t show up with a warning label; Scripture tells us he comes disguised as an “angel of light.” He is the father of lies, the ultimate deceiver, and he come strictly to steal, kill, destroy, and breed mass confusion. He lures us in with things that look fun, harmless, or exciting. But once you take a bite of it… you suddenly realize its not at all what you thought it was.
Sometimes, it takes a really long time before we even realize we’ve been duped. And by the time our eyes open, we feel like we’re so far over our heads. We feel completely stuck, depressed, full of fear, or weighed down by guilt.
One of the devil’s main goals is to get us so distracted by our failures that we begin to feel like God is far away, or that He could never love us because of our mistakes. If you have ever felt that way, let that feeling be an immediate sign, to you: That is the deceiver trying to deceive you! Our God, Jesus Christ, will not stop loving you. It does not matter what kind of mistakes we make. He is always right here with us- NOT far away, standing in the distance waiting for us to get clean.
He is a loving Father who forgives our sins completely. All you have to do is turn around and ask Him. You can literally just pray: “God, I messed up…AGAIN. Please forgive me. Please help me and give me strength.” And guess what? He will! Every single time.
Remember, this walk is not about trying to live a completely flawless, perfect life. We are human beings! Our Heavenly Father intimately knows us and He knows we are not perfect.
The victory is simply about realizing when you’ve messed up, humbly asking for help, getting back up, and trying again! The best part of all is that we do not have to try and navigate these tricks on our own. Jesus didn’t leave us stranded; He gave us the Holy Spirit to be our personal Helper. Sometimes in life, we get duped. It happens to the best of us. But the more you stay close to God and ask for guidance from your Helper, the more you learn how to recognize the enemy’s subtle signs. You become more on guard, more alert, and you won’t be as easily deceived next time. The Holy Spirit will teach you exactly what to look out for.

This week, these special “Honey Bun” rolls were wrapped up with love and sent out into our community alongside a reminder from 1 Peter 5:7 to “Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares for you” And let me tell you, the kitchen pan did not stay full for long! It brings my heart so much joy to see these empty spaces, knowing a little bit of sweetness and the love of Jesus was brought into their day. No matter what tricks you’ve fallen for or how far over your head you feel today, your mistakes do not define you. Dust the flour off your hands, get back up, and lean on your Helper today!
